Next section meeting - Thursday 26 October at The Bull Hotel, Bull Lane, Wrotham, Kent, TN15 7RF.

19 May 2015, from Jeff Kaby

Dear All,
The section AGM was held at our March meeting at The Bull, the committee remains the same, but with one extra member, Keith Barker has now joined us and we would like to say a warm welcome to him, a reminder now of your Kent & East Sussex Committee:-
Chairman – Doug Hodson, Secretary – Jeff Kaby, Treasurer – Adrian Moore, Webmaster – Jack Hodson, other Committee Members are Peter Stanley and Keith Barker.

Starting last year, a Cup was provided called ‘The Jeff Kaby Cup’ to be presented to the member who is considered to have contributed a great deal to the section in the past year, this year it was presented to Doug Hodson and our thanks go to Doug for his hard work.

Jeff presents Doug with the ‘Jeff Kaby Cup’ – photo Rob Taylor

Some members took their Alfa’s along to the Horsham Piazza on Easter Monday and Keith Barker has provided us with the following write up:-
Write up on Horsham Piazza by Keith Barker
I have only received a couple of messages regarding Spring Alfa Day at Duxford, I was unable to attend, but the comments received were that the weather was not brilliant, but the show was good.

Brooklands attracted the interest of some of our members, they all seemed to enjoy the day and Rob & Sue Taylor posted a video on the section face-book of themselves on track in their 164.

To access our sections face-book it’s just Alfa Romeo Owners Club, Kent & East Sussex, it is a closed to club, so if you wish to post anything, please let me know, as all members can be added.

UKP Leisure invited us to their Classic Car Show at Sittingbourne, this was to raise funds for the Air Ambulance, which has its 25th anniversary this year, there were cars from other clubs also, and some very nice machinery, the weather was great and we took along 11 Alfa’s, there were things to entertain the children + stalls and a chap displaying Model Tanks, Jeep and a Dukw, all of which were working models.

This year’s Tulip Rally was organised by Mark Webster & John Perthen and David Smith tells the story in his usual way.

Our next event is the Historic Festival at Brands Hatch, a report next time,

Jeff Kaby

6th April 2015, Horsham Piazza Italia report from Keith Barker

Once again the organisers of the Piazza Italia invited AROCKES and other groups to enjoy this annual Easter event which for Alfa Romeos is always held on Easter Monday.
The arrangement was slightly different to previous years when we met in Rusper Village, much to the hostility of some (but not all) residents, and drove in convoy to the Horsham park & ride car park from where we were police escorted into Horsham on a first come first served basis. It worked well but over the years the numbers grew to a point where anything Italian would turn up and be allowed into Horsham town centre. Those who could not be accommodated were shown to external car parks and that unfortunately included some of the best cars. There was even a Piaggio Ape one year.

This year however, that problem had been addressed so only five of our section were selected and I'm pleased to say that my Brera Sv6 Prodrive was one of the lucky five along with Clive Baker in his beautiful 1966 Giulia 1300, Oliver Kirkpatrick's immaculate GTV and Paul Proctors new Giulietta. Gordon Robinson and his lovely 1965 2600 Spider unfortunately had to drop out at the last minute. We travelled down on Sunday afternoon and stayed over night with a friend in Partridge Green only 7 miles away, so we didn't have the early start that other members had.

We all met at Hilliers Garden Centre who welcomed us with complimentary coffee and whose management of the parking was first class considering the number of cars involved especially with some arriving late. We were assembled along with “super cars” such as Lamborghinis and Ferraris and some British Aston Martins, Bentleys and a new Rolls Royce. There was even a black German thing with a food mixer in the boot ! Also a large group of  scooters and bikes left over from the 1960s Mods and Rockers the owners of which caused great amusement when imagining how they might have looked in 1965 in Margate......most I'm sure were still wearing the same parka coats and an aroma of Brylcreem was still evident !..(also on the male riders !) A sense of nostalgia for those who had since lost the hair to use it on.

Police motor cyclists escorted the first cars and the two-wheelers into Horsham followed by the Alfas who were largely left to our own devices to find our way as we gradually got separated by other non event traffic but we eventually got into The Horsham Carfax where we parked outside Waterstones and began our tour of the wonderful Italian Market and the Italian exotica that had arrived before us. Various classic Alfa Romeos, an 8c Competizione, an 8c Spider and three 4c's were interspersed with the top end of Italian romantica with an immaculate Lamborghini Miura attracting great attention. Entertainment was by opera singer Franz Hepburn from Nassau in the Bahamas and I was privileged to chat to him as I once lived and worked there.

After a very enjoyable day, dead on 3pm engines once again burst into life and we were escorted out of Carfax through enthusiastic crowds waving to us, and we headed home looking forward to next years invitation.

I'm sure that our members will join me in thanking Roger Eke for inviting us and for his patience in programming the arrangements. I did of course thank him for also providing a warm and sunny day and I was assured that it was all part of the service.

6 March 2014, from Doug Hodson

Dear All,

At a most interesting AGM (an oxymoron you might think) we looked back over a what I believe was a most successful year.

Some of the more notable events were Soft Top Sunday at Goodwood, the Section BBQ at the Spitfire Museum at Manston and the Pininfarini get together at the Polo Club. There were many more events - to many to mention but in all a great year.

We have some great events lined up for 2014 already with the Tangmere Museum visit and the Caterham Cars visit the standout events so far. We hope to get some technical experts lined up to give a chat at a future meeting.

It was voted on and decided to expand the committee which meant that we welcomed on board Jack, Adrian and Peter. We also extend our thanks to Jane Kaby for her efforts in the role of treasurer.

One of my hobby horse subjects was raised again and that is the lack of new younger members. How to overcome this is our main challenge for the future. Also the lack of attendance at our meetings or our events by a large majority of members in our area. We think that a maximium of 50 members show up in total (and not all at once) out of around 200 potential attendees. If you are one of those that receive this message but don't attend then please consider at least trying out an event or a meeting and seeing if we are really boring (hopefully not!) or maybe are like minded people who love their Alfas.

The committee will meet to decide other ways to attract a younger membership.

AGM 2014

Finally I sprung a surprise on the Section Secretary by announcing that the large Gold Cup that we won as best contributor to Spring Alfa Day at the Cotswold Wildlife Centre in 2012 was going to be rechristened as the Jeff Kaby Cup in recognition of his great contribution to the club over a long period.

Also I announced that this cup would be awarded each year to the person making the greatest contribution to the club each year and that the winner for 2014 would be ........Jeff Kaby.

Without Jeff's efforts I am sure the club would have faded away and died long ago and I feel privileged to have been able to make this gesture.

So I hope that some of you may feel you would like to come to some of events and meetings - see you there.

Doug Hodson

Bowling 2014

Our Annual Ten Pin Bowling Competition was held at AMF Bowling, Ashford, on Sunday 16th February, there were in excess of 20 members taking part and all seemed to be enjoying themselves, some even achieved strikes at times which was followed by much cheering, there was plenty of time for chatting about Alfa's etc between turns to bowl, we played 2 games, and after all the excitement Steve Kirkham emerged as the winner. The runner up was John Day, with Garry Kaby in 3rd place, many thanks to all who came along and took part and congratulations to all who acheived good scores.

Ciao, Jeff

Dear All,

As you know we held the section AGM at the Bull last Thursday, Doug Hodson had agreed to continue as Chair and I as Secretary, both were voted in by the members present and those who sent messages with votes.

Jane Kaby stood down from being Treasurer, mainly for health reasons, and 2 names were put forward for this position -- Adrian Moore and Peter Stanley, after voting by messages received and those in attendance at the meeting, Adrian Moore came out top with only 1 vote more than Peter Stanley, we asked Peter if he would like to join the Committee anyway and he has agreed.

Jack Hodson had agreed to become a Committee member and was voted in at the meeting, he has been Webmaster for quite some time, but has never been a Committee member.

Many thanks to all the Committee for what they have done and are about to do.

I sent you a list of events already arranged for 2014, the one in doubt as discussed at the AGM is Bromley Pageant, we did not have a good position last year and after my contacting the organisers to ask for a better position this year, I was asked to send in the entry and fees and they would see what they could do, so no guarantee of a better position.

There were other events discussed and these will be sent out once decisions are made.

Kind regards,

Dear All,

It is our intention to arrange for all entries from AROC to park together on the Folkestone Old Timer Event, as mentioned, entry forms are available to download from the Grand Hotel website. The 'Old Timer Rally' will again take place on The Leas at Folkestone on August Bank Holiday Monday 25th, entry forms and more info' is already available to download from the website of The Grand Hotel, Folkestone, they will accept later cars as you belong to a club, you will need enter same on the entry form, entry is free, perhaps you could also let me know if you will be going?

The Annual Ten Pin Bowling Competition has been booked at AMF Bowling, Ashford, for Sunday 16th February, 10-00 to 10-15 arrival for a 10-30am start, would all those wanting to take part (and have not already told me)? please let me know asap, I can then inform the centre.

Kind regards, Jeff

7 December 2013, from Jeff Kaby

Dear All, Chritmas is rapidly approaching and your committee would like to wish you all a very happy time.

It was good to see all the members who attended the quiz night for the Mike Bedwell Trophy, particularly Phil Ardley who we had not met before.

Many thanks to Dave Norman and Brian Creasey for setting the questions and congratulations to the winners (after a tie break) Steve Watts and yours truly, runners up were Giovanni & Jacky D'Avanzo, with Pam & Roger Smith and Adrian Moore & Graham Duplock tied for 3rd, a nice evening with nibbles for everyone half way through the quiz.

As mentioned in a previous update, there will be no meeting in December or January, but there are already more than 30 members going to the Post Christmas Dinner at The Bull on Saturday 11th January, many thanks to all those who have paid and a reminder to those who have not yet done so! menu choices to be sent to me by the 1st week in the new year.

The section AGM will be held at our meeting in February, if anyone would like to put their name down to be included on the AROCKES Committee, please let me know in good time, I can then inform all those that I am unable to contact by e-mail.

Your suggestions for events in 2014 would be greatly appreciated, so, thinking caps on, are there new events that you would like us to be involved in?

1 December 2013, from Jeff Kaby

Dear All,

A new plan for paying for your rooms at the Bull, should you wish to stay overnight, because of their cancellation policy, which is 24 hours, they take your credit card details when booking, but only charge on the day, so if you cancel before the 24 hours, you will not be charged.

In view of this, will all those planning to book B&B at the hotel, please contact the Bull direct 01732 789800 or mention that you are with the Alfa Romeo Owners Club for the Post Christmas Dinner, as we are receiving a discount.

Please still send your cheque to Jane for your dinner.

If you have already included your payment for a room on the cheque you have sent to Jane, or you do not use a credit card, not to worry, we will make alternative arrangements for you. Many thanks,

Kind regards,

20 November 2013, from Jeff Kaby

Dear All,

We are planning a visit to the 'Tangmere Military Aviation Museum' near Chichester, West Sussex.

This could well be in March/April of 2014, entry fees are £9.00 per adult, £7.00 for seniors and £3.00 for children 5 to 16 years of age, under 5's go free.

Can you please let me know if you would be interested in this and if a weekday would suit you, as this is what the museum is suggesting, or does it need to be a weekend? (we may be able to persuade them) please also let me know if there any dates when you are unable to make it?

Ciao, Jeff.
