Bromley Pageant of Motoring – Sunday 10th June 2012

As usual the Bromley Pageant of Motoring turned into a “will it won’t it day”…rain that is.

The long-range forecast wasn’t good. Carol Kirkwood lacked confidence. The ‘I-phone’ was far from optimistic. However, Sunday morning the sun was shining over Bromley. I only live half a mile from Norman Park and so I had to drive around the block a couple of times to feel as though I was actually going somewhere.

Well Bromley doesn’t disappoint. The largest one day car show in the country. An amazing selection of vehicles from 1930’s Aston Martins to 1980’s Honda Accords, (rich hint of sarcasm).

I arrived late, (because of my circuitous approach). Once I had honed in on the flags marking the AROCKES stand I found the perfect spot…directly under the gazebo. Well I do seem to have developed an intermittent fault, (probably wiring), with the release motor on the hood fastening on the passenger side. The look on Doug’s face was well worth it though!

A good turn out from the club again: Doug, Stuart, Mark, Gordon, Hadyn and yours truly made up the Spider Contingent. Jeff Kaby in the 155 on it’s last outing to a club meet? He has had an epiphany it would seem and is looking to join the Spider Contingent, (please contact Jeff if you have a good Phase III 916 for sale – only teasing Jeff).

Also flying the flag for the Alfisti were Flavio (All-wheel Drive, 33), Paul (Giulietta), Andy (916 GTV) and Oliver, (156 estate).

Giovanni also put in an appearance in his 1750 GTV cunningly disguised as a Fiat Panda….

As the day rolled on we were treated to displays from the Aston Martin Owners Club, the MG Owners Club (celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the MGB) and the celebrated Club Honda Accord. There was a display from a world champion motorcycle tricks rider and live music from the 60’s.

I had a splendid time looking round the auto-jumble and after an hour returned to find that my car had been going off intermittently for most of that time…My sincere apologies to those in the club who had to endure the irritation.

And what of the weather? It kept dry until 4pm when we got a light shower for a few minutes. Sometimes you just have to keep the faith!
